Does anyone know if the use of an h1 tag as a hyperlink will change the importance normally placed on the tag?
Is this a good idea or not?

More weight is given to keywords that appear within H1 tags.

Prominence works internally not externally as an added VOTE of any kind.
So... NO

I understand the use of the h tags and I know that keywords in the anchor text of a hyperlink are beneficial.
I am lost as to the use of both in the same placement.
I have searched for answers regarding my quest and have been unable to find any or should I say, any that helps.
To explain further;
Code: html
<h1>Keywords for my site</h1>
or
<h1><a href="hyperlink">Keywords for my site</a></h1>
Does the use of the hyperlink increase or decrease the importance of the keywords or the page linked to?
My reason for asking, I am working on some CSS to create a valid link and do not want to create what might be construed as blackhat or even greyhat SEO.

Gyspsy,
You posted just before I finished.
The link structure would be used for internal linking. So what you are saying is that there would be no effects positive or negative, setting a link this way. Correct?

Now I understand you better, CE -- it wouldn't affect it either way.

Well, G'day CE.
As you would know, I'm out of my depth with the finer points of link value. However, I have an answere which I thinks makes sense, coming from a different direction.
As I understand it:
1) You would only have one h1 tag to a page.
2) You target one keyword per page. That's what that particular page is about.
So for Page A, the file name would be pagea.htm, the title would be <title>Page A</title> and the page heading would be <h1>Page A</h1>
3) To link from Page A to Page B you would use the keyword from Page B as anchor text.
So for these reasons, I think you would be doing a strange thing, making your h1 tag a hyperlink.
Regards,
Laurie.

Thanks Laurie,
I was involved with the coding and had overlooked the use on different pages.
I think the best thing to do at this point would be to just have it as a normal link containing the site title.
Since this is something I think will be helpful to a lot of people, I believe it would be better off to be more of a generic set up and not as specific as an h tag would be.
Back to some other e-mails and then to modify some code.
