So do you all prefer OS Commerce over PayPal?  Or is OS Commerce something you use with PayPal or similar program? (am I confusing things again?)
Thanks!

as far as i can see - OSCommerce  is the database and CMS that sits on your site

OSC has plugins/modules that allow it to connect to payment gateways such as paypal and google checkout; as well as many others.

OSC and many other open-source shopping cart CMS pagckaes are configurable to be SEO friendly. For that you need several things

1 - an understanding of SEO
2 - knowledge of the language the shopping cart CMS is written in (eg PHP)
3 - the ability to work your way through the code to make the relevant changes

For OSC there's probably documentation/plugins to make it SEO friendly

Main site http://www.oscommerce.com/
Additional modules http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions

Most LAMP servers have èFantasticoè or some other auto-installer that in most cases has OSC as an option. IF so, it makes playing around with it easy :0)

It can hook up to a miriad of payment processors including PayPal ......

Re: Shopping Cart Mystery??

Ok, so this is probably another dumb question:   If I use OS Commerce, I'm entering product info into that database, right?
If I utilize PayPal as the payment processor, do I also have to enter the product info in that database???

big_smile

Thanks again!

Re: Shopping Cart Mystery??

A CMS= Content Mangament System

SO the Cart Application manages the products as well as some of the static content and presentation aspects.

It also handles all the financial calculations and merges to the payment processor of choice for final transaction purposes.

So there is no need for anything from PP really... the cart takes care of the shop.

As far as it being a full fledged CMS, I don't recomend it. I tend to use something like a true CMS in the form of Joomla

If you look at my SEO Handbook site, the main areas and content are controlled via Joomla and the order processing and payment is handled by OSC

Main - http://www.the-seo-handbook.com/
Cart - http://www.the-seo-handbook.com/purchas … g_cart.php

I prefer the CMS does what it does best (manage content) and the cart what it is strong at. I don't like a CMS with ecommerce added on, nor a cart pretending to be a CMS

Re: Shopping Cart Mystery??

You don't need to enter anything into paypals product database if you use OSC

OSC will talk to paypal and they each know what to do

Re: Shopping Cart Mystery??

With os commerce you can use paypal and quite a few other gateways.  I have used zen cart, cube, mal and a few others but have definetly developed a liking for os-commerce.  I believe with os commerce you are more in control then some of the others.  (Make a copy of the files and then play with the php you will be surprised at the changes that you can make.  But be sure do do these only on the copy until you are completley satisfied)
