My site http://www.jepunbali.com/ was at No 1 with keyword "hotel in bali" last week.
Then I tried to remove for about 30 links (all refer to bali hotel and hotel in bali) out from my homepage, the next day my site was gone from top rank.
Three days ago I returned all links above with same condition as previous. Yesterday I've got back the no 1 on Yahoo.
Even I was at No 1 on Yahoo, my rank at google was so poor. So to be no 1 at Google is my challenge now. Try and try hard..

You need good number of links to be at the top in Yahoo SERPS. Yahoo gives much important to incoming links from other websites. To be at the top in Yahoo you need a huge bunch of BLs.

I'm sorry, but these 'old wives tales' that hang around the Forums tend to bug me a bit.
I was going to post a separate topic for this, but seeing this one, it's just as well to post it here.
I bought a new domain (one of many, now) and published a new site to it. Within 1 week I was indexed, within 1 day I was ranked at number 5 in Yahoo (Australia) as it's a .com.au domain. For the purpose of the exercise, I need to give the URL (I'm not advertising) - http://www.html-web-design.com.au
Cutting the long story short. I was in the midst of an experiment - To see if the 'heading' tags <h1> etc, made much of a difference in specific SEs. I removed them from this phrase: "web design and building" (a pretty competitive one in the Aust SEs anyway).
When I removed them, I dropped to No 12 - (I placed a marker in my description so I would know when I was crawled). I put them back in and went back to No 5. All this took place within about 10 days and I have NO incoming links indexed yet ("We did not find results for "link:www.html-web-design.com.au")
Firstly I was going to point out that. in Yahoo, at least, the 'heading tags' are of some considerable value and should be used when appropriate (This does not mean GO CRAZY).
But as I saw this topic and the last post, I have to now say, obviously, links don't count for much when it comes to getting on the first page of Yahoo. Where did you get your info from - is there a source??

I agree with Wiz as I put the "heading tags" on the brief description at top of the page. But this only works on Yahoo and MSN? nothing on Google ?

Nothing works on bloody Google!!!

In fact, if Andy had said what he did about Google, I would have agreed! They are very links oriented there. It is almost impossible for a new site to get indexed within a month, klet alone a week (mine was online within a week and ranking on Yahoo that same day, and then revisited within two days again and re-ranked). And as far as their SERPs, well... good luck, no matter what you do.
Then, even if you are lucky enough to rank well for a good search term, for some reason, one day, you just disappear... Google are very fickle, but it's pretty pointless to try to do anything without some quality (and possibly quantity incoming links).
Admittedly, my related experience is within the AU Yahoo Search Engine, but still the results returned were in excess of 3 million. I imagine Yahoo use the same algorithms etc whether for world or country specific searches.
