Ok, I have a guestbook on my site...I hate it. I want to just delete the whole damn thing and start over from scratch. However, I have no idea how they work; I dont know PHP.
Is there any way to keep these damn spammers out? I mean, every day I get 5 - 10 spam posts a day. I turned off BBCode or whatever, so they cant use the "[ url ]" codes to get a backlink. I dont know what else to do....
Recommendations? Anyone?
I need a drink....

Not sure I understand the problem. Just delete the entire page from your web and remove it from the navigation. Or you can smack it with your light saber

Everyone's always got something to say about Star Wars....
The problem is every day I get 5 - 10 posts to my guestbook, each of them spam. Is there a way to stop that?

what you may like to try - not sure how to implement it on your site though, is one of those graphics that people have to type the letters/numerals in for a successful post. I was getting 150 spam comments a day on my blog - all robot stuff. I tried askisment spam filter which quarantined it, but I still needed to go through it. I now use this graphic and this has stopped robot spam dead in its tracks.
Take a look at my blog (link below) to see how it is implemented.
I'm sure there is a plugin for your guestbook.
EDIT - I see on the software provider's own guestbook they have this implemented

Actually, you can get guestbooks that allow you to screen the posts before they get published. You get notified of a post, then decide if you want it. If you tell people up front that spam wont make it into your guestbook (and mean it) they usually wont bother to post in the first place.

Hi Puma, welcome
The process of approving is just as tiresome - I was going through 150 spam per day. The trouble is many spam are generated by bots, so the numbers can be very large.

They won't bother to post in the first place if its an actual person doing the posting. Most of the spam that people receive is automated posting...

I found the image verification script, and I am working on putting that in now. I should have it done sometime today, its not too difficult.
I will let you know if this keeps out the spammers, as this morning I had accumulated like 20 something spam posts, AGAIN.
*rips hair out*
Thanks everyone!
Just visited your "renewed" questbook, I like that Idea of your image verifier, some other veriiers take you to another page or hard to read....Is it possible to share where your image verifier came from?

Sure. I got it from here.
Very easy to implement, to be honest. However, there is a new version of the Advanced Guestbook out now, but this mod doesnt work for it, I tried....well, if I knew PHP I'm sure I could make it work....
Thanks.

I had the problem in spades man. I'd read somewhere that guestbooks were becoming a thing of the past. I just removed the d@m thing. I don't miss it. I replaced it with a forum.

I supose the term guestbook is dated, maybe the term comments book would be more appropriate - I guess it all has to do with the purpose of the facility.
A forum that requires joining is a barrier to a lot of people I would think, while a quick comment is easy to do.

I had wondered whether or not guestbooks were a thing of the past....my thought is that if people are still running bots to spam them, they have to be prevalent in a good amount of websites. I get no traffic, so I'm not surprised mine only gets spam, which by the way I have received NO spam in the last day when I would normally get about 20.
For everyone that helped me while I vented (and reminded me about the image verification thing - that completely slipped my mind) I have one thing to say...
Cheers!
