Back in March when the BBC aired the financial programme I was invited to take part in, Mark from SiteReference mentioned it would be interesting to see what kind of hits it generated.
It was a niche programme on tax evasion and viewed by a million or more in the UK. The programme put up details for one of our Monaco sites for five seconds or so.
The result was a record day in visitors.
Since then the Monaco site has crept up the search engines. Not Google, nowhere to be seen.
MSN we were second for the term Monaco Grand Prix until 4 days before the race and then it disappeared from their rankings quicker than a Ferrari through the Monaco tunnel.
But we were 2nd in yahoo.co.uk and 8th in yahoo.com
Saturday, qualifying day, we equalled the number of visitors from the BBC film through Yahoo.
And yesterday, race day, Yahoo brought in double the number of visitors compared to the 24 hours immediately after the TV programme was aired. My guess is that if we were first in yahoo.com amd yahoo.co.uk that figure would have escalated dramatically.
As an added bonus David Coulthard who part owns a hotel in Monaco and is a Monte Carlo resident came third and was on the winners podium...I feel a keyword rich article coming on...
Roger
Thanks for the update. Its interesting about Google. I have a feeling after reading quite a bit today that Google is being more picky then ever in who they award the top results.

Intersting,
I have a very ordinary page on ringtones that has had no. 1 spot on G for over a year...never has moved...
Well, its going to vary from keyword to keyword, depending on competitiveness and what the competition is doing...

there is only a short list more competitive than ringtones! A fluke getting number one tho - and keeping it.
