OK, I'm just going to come right out and say it - it may not be nice but pop-ups/pop-under is the fastest way to make the $$$.
Flame me if you want, but the results don't lie.

I don't deny it, and I would even consider doing it for this site, but the response is so negative that I wonder if it is worth it sometimes. Also, there is the question that if you turn off enough people so that they do not visit the site anymore, do you still make more money?

thats the key I guess
I get maybe 6000 visits a month from people searching for "Maria Sharapova" pictures on a certain search engine. Now you Maria Sharapova is not related to my content at all so those pages get a pop-under. Will it tick some people off ? Possibly, but those kind of people a. probably have a pop-up blocker and won't see it anyway or b. most likely aren't interested in what my site is really about.
I doubt these people are ever going to return anyway, they're going to download a couple of pictures of up Maria Sharapova's tennis skirt and be on their way - might as well make a penny or two before they go though.

Not on my site it isn't. And I have never read a pop up because I delete right away and then have an angry experience with my visit to the site.
It may be true, but it's not for me.

It's a slow dying fad, but it will pass away. You have to deal with so many pop up blockers, plus they've lost they're appeal. I think pop ups still work good for getting sunbscribers to your newsletter, but as far as selling, I think those days are quickly passing.

Those annoying popups:rolleyes: I detest going to a website to look for info or read something and get a popup. Whats even worse is when you try to click out of it, the pop up takes you to their website that you didnt want to go to first.
Affiliate programs, I find it very hard to believe anyone makes that sort of money off one.
Best ways to advertise, I have found is in directories, link exchanges, ezines, and best way I have found to get my name and business out there is to write articles and submit them to different places.
As we all know Word of mouth is your best advertising. I find nothing is worse than someone going to a group or to a forum and posting ads all day. Its a known fact that you make the best sales and have the best customers by networking. I personally do not buy from someone if i do not know them and I will not reccommend them to anyone either.
Hmmm I wrote an article on this exact same thing a while back.

Most of us consider affiliate programs as something different from advertising. With affiliate programs you have to sell something, with advertising you put an ad on your site and you're done.
Yes, you can make money with affiliate programs - but thats not what were talking about.

I sell ads on one of my sites - I work it on a $ per month basis, with the price based on the location and ad size. I don't do a lot, but its a nice bit of cream!

One of my basic tenets of life:
"I don't buy anything over the telephone (telemarketers) and I don't buy from advertisers who use spam or pop-ups...even though I may need/want their products."
Never have...never will.

As a comparison, I think pop-unders are
better than pop-ups because they come
after the story. Therefore when you find a
place to do this sort of advertising
think about this kind.

It's just slightly less annoying but I click it out right off. I don't like "in your face" advertising, even though others may find it works - it don't work on me. It's like litter on the beach in my opinion.
Have you noticed the ways that people purchase (Tivo, VCR's, DVR's etc) to get around advertising on TV? Advertising is not a pleasant experience to most users. I like to keep my store well stocked and use images etc because when someone goes there they want to buy. There has to be a better way. Banners and adsense type ads are OK, but pop-ups/unders REQUIRE action. If you don't close the damn thing you're stuck. I think that's why I resent them, and that may also be why they work. I don't know. It depends on the site. I haven't had much luck with them, but haven't left up long enough to really measure their effectiveness because I despise them. Litter on the beach. I know I've gotten angry enough to close the ad and the website. I guess advertising will always be a two edged sword.
