Pixel Sites

Interesting article John!

I remember coming across one of these pixels sites a few months ago.  It took me a minute or two to figure out what it was. I clicked on one or two pictures. And then I left.  Now I should add, in general I don't click on advertisements.  As someone browsing the Internet, a page full of ads doesn't really attract me. Maybe as you say if there was more content and less ad.  What about a competition pixel page - each ad brings up a competition - now there's a money making idea!

I think though as an advertiser considering advertising through one of these pixel sites, the real concern is - how much targeted traffic is this ad going to deliver.  Clearly the original milliondollar pixel page is going to continue sending traffic to its advertisers - its got a buzz about it.  A friend mentioned it to me a few days ago, gave me the address and I went and looked.  No clicks though.

Thinking about it I guess the challenge is three-fold.  One the pixel-seller has to be able to bring traffic to their pixel page in sufficient quantities to make each pixel actually worth something. Two the advertiser has to be able to create an ad (in as small number of pixels) that will draw targeted customers to click. Three the advertiser has to create a page that moves those potential customers further down the pipeline towards whatever the advertisers goal is.  Competitions could certainly do this...

At the end of the day will the advertiser get enough targeted traffic even if all three of these challenges have been met successfully?  I don't know.  It'd be interesting to see the figures.

Does it work on a combined cost-per-click and cost-per-pixel or just cost-per-pixel?

Interesting area...

Thomas

Re: Pixel Sites

I personally think that the original idea was absolute genius, but it doesn't work in replication as well.  It is kind of like those GiveMeABuck.com websites that for a while were seeing some really good money.  The novelty of the idea lead people to make the site successful, but as soon as there is one duplication you won't have the same success.

I also think that there is a cycle in the media for things like this.  There is just so often that people can hear about someone coming up with a simple idea that makes them millions before it gets old.

Ditto. I agree, it was a one shot deal. Dude even made national news. Lucky bustard.

Re: Pixel Sites

Hello Everyone,

I have to disagree to some degree.

The concept of Pixel Advertising was originally unique, but there was no point to it. It was neat at first and it made a lot of money only because it was a brand new concept, making world-wide press multiple times.  Then all the copycat sites came out. They thought they would make lots of money doing nothing with someone else's idea; making no advancement on someone else's "patent".  They thought that the entire world-wide-web would embrace each of their websites for time and money for no reason.   People do not want to give hard earned money or time for nothing.

The ability to bring the pixel advertisers targeted traffic would make the advertising worth spending money on. I do not think people should discount the Pixel Advertising concept.  When it is applied with a good website, that has content and a purpose, pixel advertising will bring targeted traffic and benefits to everyone involved!

What do you think about my site for an example, The City of Rochester: TheCityofRochester.com

Thank you,
~Gary

Gary - yes I see what you mean about taking the pixel sites to a different level and extending the patent. Damned fine idea the overlay of a map.

Re: Pixel Sites

Thank you very much.

There is so much more coming to this site! People love the pixel advertising.

This is because of the powerful, sub-conscience use of imagery; interactivity of the consumer with the business message; and the willingness of the consumer to the business website!

Our site has had extremely strong growth and our features are further increasing our traffic!  But think of the enormous increase in traffic when the local news and national press takes notice and the number of people who will forever frequent TheCityofRochester.com for its excellent services and source of information!

Our focus is on the people who live in Rochester, NY and Monroe County; and the families and friends of those people. TheCityofRochester.com has many wonderful service-features coming soon.  If you are someone who is interested in any Rochester “web products” that may exist, know that while we focus on these services to start, there are other extremely exciting advancements, which we will bring to the City of Rochester through TheCityofRochester.com.

Our Base Features Include:
1.       Current Rochester Weather & The 7-Day Weather Forecast
2.       Complete Movie Listings –Every Movie, on Every Screen, in Every Theater, with Full Detail
3.       TheCityofRochester.com User Email Accounts
4.       Local Rochester Chat on TheCityofRochester.com

Our programmers have been working very hard to complete these projects as quickly as possible, but I feel it is more important to build quality products to start, rather than to do it over a second time. Our focus has been strategic in planning, free in our thoughts, while cautiously moving forward.

Sometimes we move two steps forward and one step back, but we are getting there.
